Effect of Acidophilus Milk on the Reduction of Serum Cholesterol Level of Korean Adults

Abstract
Fifty male and forty-four female volunteers were given with 80 §¢ of acidophilus milk containing 1 X 10^8 cfu/§¢ of Lactobacillus acidophilus SNUL 01, twice a day for 4 weeks, which has been shown to have the high bile salts deconjugadon activity and was isolated from healthy Korean adult. The changes of their total serum cholesterol, triglyceride(TG), high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol, and low density lipoprotein(LDL)-cholesterol have been investigated.
The intake of acidophilus milk reduced significantly the total serum cholesterol of the volunteers(p$lt;.01), until one week after stopping acidophilus milk intake(p.$lt;.05). Especially, with high serum cholesterol group having above 220 §·/§£ of initial total serum cholesterol, initial total cholesterol level(242.9¡¾4.9 §·/§£) was reduced to 226.4¡¾4.0 §·/§£ after acidophilus milk intake and to 219¡¾5.5 §·/§£ after one week of stopping acidophilus milk intake. And total serum cholesterol level of male volunteers in normal cholesterol group, whose initial total serum cholesterol was below 220 §·/§£, was greatly reduced and that of female volunteers in high cholesterol group was reduced similarly.
The serum TG level of volunteers was not significantly affected by the intake of acidophilus milk in normal cholesterol group but the TG was slightly increased in high cholesterol group. Their serum HDL-cholesterol level was significantly reduced by acidophilus milk intake(p $lt; .01), then significantly increased after one week of stopping acidophilus milk intake(p $lt; .01) Their serum LDL-cholesterol level was not significantly changed by acidophilus milk intake and significantly reduced after one week of stopping acidophilus milk(p $lt; .01).
With volunteers increasing age and percent ideal body weight(PIBW), total serum cholesterol level were significantly reduced by the intake of acidophilus milk(p$lt;.05). With the age group of fifties having 120% PIBW, their serum cholesterol level were reduced more than other groups.
